The first camera successfully sent 262 feet into the skies was attached to a balloon in 1858. Unfortunately, these original flight photos were lost. Then in 1860, James Wallace Black sent his camera 2,000 feet into the sky to photograph Boston from the Queen of the Air hot air balloon. This photo, shown above, is the oldest surviving aerial photograph. Many others successfully captured aerial footage since then, and it wasn't until 1980 when the first modern drones began to show up.
